Its original name was 'Shahabsar'. Mukundgarh founded by Thakur Mukund Singh Saheb with the help of Seth Sevek Ram Ghuwalewala. The Kanodias also played an important role for it. It was the Thikana of Bhojrajji Ka Shekhawats.

As of 2001 India census, Mukundgarh had a population of 17,790. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Mukundgarh has an average literacy rate of 55%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 68%, and female literacy is 43%. In Mukundgarh, 18% of the population is under 6 years of age. It was established in 1857.

A leisurely walk around the village is good enough to prove the worth and variety of the frescos and paintings on the walls of Havelis located in Mukundgarh. Make an effort to convince the owners and you can have access to some of the best decorated Divan Khanas furnished with 17th and 18th century wooden furniture, Family portraits and wall and ceiling hangings. The painted family chhattris are a sight for the sore eyes. The baolis (step wells) that are more than 120 m deep are still quenchi8ng the thirst of the owners though now run by electric motors.
